Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). The key word is Rating. A Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) is classified by the rating of it’s tires, suspension and brakes. A CMV has nothing to do with the actual weight of your vehicle. Likewise, if it’s equipped with Air Brakes it may not need a CDL. If your vehicle GVWR less than 26,001 pounds and you plan to use your vehicle to haul Hazmat, YES.
If your vehicle GVWR less than 26,001 pounds and you plan to drive a passenger vehicle that has seating for 16 people including the driver, YES.
If you are driving across state lines or more than 150 miles from your ranch/farm (Air Mile Radius) you will need a CDL.
If you have an Air Brake “L” restriction on your CDL License, go to DMV and take the written test for “Air Brakes” and get your permit. You will have to wait two wee too test, so study the CDL Manual and Practice!
